Reč ćilim potiče iz turskog jezika i u našem narodu označava vunenu tkaninu tkanu na razboju, koja služi kao pokrivač pri spavanju, prekrivač za krevet, zidni ukras ili prostirka za pod. Ćilim je imao značajnu ulogu u običajnoj praksi našeg naroda i pojavljuje se u mnogim običajima životnog ciklusa. Na ćilim se spuštalo novorođenče odmah po dolasku na svet, mlada je u miraz donosila ćilim, polagao se u kovčeg ispod pokojnika. Brojem ćilima u jednom domaćinstvu merila se ekonomska moć porodice.
U šabačkom kraju ćilim je izrađivan na horizontalnom razboju. Osnova ćilima je kudeljna ili pamučna, a potka vunena. Sastavljan je iz dve, ređe iz tri pole tkane tehnikama čunčanja, klečanja i pretkivanja niti na dasku. Kao nastavak tradicije doseljenih predaka, tokom 19. veka, ćilimarstvo ovog kraja je počivalo na nasleđenim tehnikama, bojama i motivima. Iz tog perioda, poznati su ćilimi „partaši“ čiju ornamentiku čine parte, tj. neprekidni niz horizontalnog motiva i jednobojni „klotni“. Postepeno se pod uticajem Vojvodine i panonske kulture, sve više prelazilo na tkanje ćilima sa „okrajnicom“ i istaknutim centralnim motivom, oko koga su simetrično raspoređeni motivi ruže, grane, listovi, cvetovi, buketi, ptice i geometrijski oblici tkani intenzivnijim tonovima boja. Mačvanski ćilim karakteriše floralna ornamentika, uglavnom ruža (samostalno, u buketu, vencu, u kombinaciji sa partama…) i predivo jakog kolorita.
Umetničku vrednost jednog ćilima narod procenjuje po izvedenoj ornamentici i ostvarenoj simetriji u sastavljenim polama, bogatstvu i skladu boja, dok se materijalna strana ogleda u težini utrošene vune pri tkanju.
Replika verna originalu ćilima iz etnološke zbirke narodnog muzeja grada Šapca izatkana je u tkačkoj radionici „Stari zanati“ Gradske organizacije invalida rada i invalidskih penzionera, i čuva od zaborava deo nematerijalne kulturne baštine šabačkog kraja. Rukotvorine šabačkog kraja – „Stari zanati“ zaštićeni su oznakom geografskog porekla, kod zavoda za intelektualnu svojinu i nalaze se na međunarodnoj listi nematerijalne kulturne baštine.
The word kilim comes from the Turkish language and for our people it means woolen fabric woven on the loom which serves as a blanket while sleeping, as a bed cover, wall decoration or the floor cover. The kilim had an important role in the customary practice of our people and it appears in numerous habits of a life cycle. The new-born baby was put on the kilim immediately after its birth, the bride brought the kilim as the dowry, it was put in the coffin under the deceased person. The economic power of a family was measured by the number of kilims it had.
In Šabac area the kilim was made on the horizontal loom. The base of the kilim is made of hemp or cotton and the woof is made of wool. It was made of two, or more rarely three halves woven by tatting, hand-made weaving and pre-weaving of the thread on the board. As continuation of tradition of immigrant ancestors, kilim production of this area was based on inherited techniques, colours and motifs during 19th century. „Partaš“ kilims, whose ornaments are made of single-colour lines i.e. continuous line of horizontal motifs and single-colour elements are well-known from that period. Gradually, under the impact of Vojvodina and Pannonian culture, weaving of kilims was switching more and more to weaving of kilims with „border“ and prominent central motif, surrounded symmetrically by the motif of rose, branch, leaves, flowers, bouquets, birds and geometrical forms woven with more intensives colour tones. The kilim from Mačva is characterized by floral ornaments, mostly rose (independently, in the bouquet, in combination with single-colour lines…) and by yarn made of bright colours.
The artistic value of one kilim is evaluated by people based on the ornaments made and symmetry in the assembled halves, the richness and the harmony of colours, while the material side is reflected in the weight of wool used for weaving.
The replica identical with the original kilim from ethnological collection of National Museum of Šabac City, woven in the weaving workshop „Old Crafts“ of city Organization of Disabled Workers and Disabled Pensioners saves part of cultural intangible heritage of Šabac area from oblivion. The handicraft products of Šabac area – „Old Crafts“ are protected by geographical origin marks in Intellectual Property Institute and they are on the international list of cultural intangible heritage.
